Visakhapatnam. 02 November 2018. The foundation stone for National Centre for Coastal Research (NCCR) and Training Facility of India Meteorological Department (IMD) under Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES) was laid at Dolphin Hills, Visakhapatnam by Dr. Harsh Vardhan, Union Minister for Science and Technology, Earth Sciences, Environment, Forest and Climate Change on 02 Nov 18.
Speaking on the occasion, Vice Adm MS Pawar Chief of Staff, ENC highlighted the symbiotic relationship of the Indian Navy with all the research activities related to coasts, oceans and meteorology. He stated that the threats to our coastline are not limited to terrorism emanating from neighbourhood alone but also pertain to coastal erosion, inundation during cyclones or Tsunamis and rise in sea levels due to climate change. The NCCR research facility will be of great use to enable understanding of the way different oceanic factors interface and interact with the coast. This would help plan developmental Activities and also help the IN in HADR Operations.
The proposed facility will have researchers, Scientists and Oceanographers from National Institute for Ocean Technology (NIOT) for unraveling the secrets of Coastal processes leading to various coastal phenomena like erosion, storm surge, mangroves, fisheries and also the issues related to the Ocean Engineering for raising the Coastal structures like ports etc. the Centre will also have a training facility of NCCR and the IMD.
