New Delhi. 28 September 2017. INS GHARIAL reached Chittagong with 62000 packs of relief material as aid from Govt of India to Govt of Bangladesh to provide assistance to approx 4,80,000 displaced persons being sheltered along the BD-Myanmar border in Bangladesh. The relief material was handed over at a ceremony on 28 Sep by High Commissioner of India to the District Commissioner, Chittagong.
The offloading of the relief material was carried out continuously throughout day and night and completed on 30 Sep. The material was simultaneously loaded onto trucks equalling a total of 54 trucks loads of material. The first convoy comprising 21 trucks reached Uikhia on the night of 29 Sep. Another convoy comprising 20 trucks left Chittagong this morning with relief material and last convoy of 13 trucks will leave shortly, all bound of Ukhia where it will be distributed by the authorities amongst the needy people.
A special word of mention to the crew of INS GHARIAL who worked round the clock to ensure timely offloading and further loading on trucks, while Asst High Commission at Chittagong provided full assistance for loading on trucks and forward despatch of the convoy. The convoys are being escorted by Bangladesh Army and the relief will be offloaded into a shelter/ godown at Ukhia for onward distribution.
