New Delhi. 18 December 2020. The annual India-UK Bilateral Dialogue on Disarmament and Non-Proliferation was held in a virtual format on 17 December 2020. The two sides exchanged views on a range of contemporary issues of mutual interest in the area of nuclear, chemical, biological disarmament and non-proliferation, conventional weapons, outer space security and export control.

Both sides recognized the importance of the dialogue for enhancing mutual understanding and appreciation on international security issues that contribute to the bilateral strategic partnership.

India has always advocated global peace and nuclear disarmament and has contributed to UN significantly on disarmament in terms of ideas, resolutions, initiatives and bridging differences through action plans.

From proposing to limiting the use of atomic energy to peaceful purposes and elimination of nuclear weapons from national arsenals to suggesting the cretion of UN Peace Fund by reduction of arms and directing the amount thus released towards development purposes to advocing the cause for a comprehensive nuclear test ban treaty, India was the first to become a party to the partial Test Ban Treaty in 1963.

India supports the idea of global governance in general and global nuclear governance in particular. The international community expects a rising power like India to shape the evolution of global governance by addressing challenges it is facing now.
